The MSU-Northern football team is more than one month removed from the spring season. The players who are currently in the program went through one week of weight training, followed by three weeks of film, lifting, and practice outside at Tilleman Field three days a week.
New Media Broadcasters had the chance to catch up with head coach Jerome Souers and he said what he liked about the progress that has been made, especially with the consistency of the defense continuing to get better, but also took away what he hopes is a promising future on the gridiron.
“Going into it, our expectations were hopefully (that) the strength improvements that we gained from January through March would show up on the football field and I believe that it did,” Souers said. “We have a lot more experience on our defense. I thought our defense showed great physicality.”
“Going into spring ball, we wanted to see that strength and (those) changes in the body that these guys have been making apply out on the football field,” Souers continued. “We were able to see that.”
“We’re excited about what happened at spring ball and it really presents for us an opportunity to look into year three as a pivot year of us,” Souers said.
With how little has come out in terms of news from the Lights’ football team, Souers discussed what lies ahead in the coming weeks. He emphasized announcing a signing class that has exceeded more than the normal number in this period because of the recruiting he and his coaching staff have been able to do in identifying who they want to join the program.
“What’s going to happen in June is really getting the new numbers into the program,” Souers said. “We set a goal to be over 100 guys on our roster.”
“Right now, we have approximately 45 new names to add to our roster,” Souers continued. “We’re close and we continue to plan to grow this program so that in years ahead, we’ll have depth, we’ll have better retention.”
“I’m pleased with the growth of the process,” Souers said. “I thought our staff did a great job of working to find new candidates that are going to fit our family; guys that have moral character, the work ethic, and the kind of discipline and attitude that we want to bring a winning tradition to our football program.”
