Northern Lights Wrestling Back in Action This Week

MSU-Northern wrestling is back on the mat this week for the start of the 2024-25 season. New Media Broadcasters chatted with 17th-year head coach Tyson Thivierge and he shared what his roster will look like for the upcoming campaign, especially returning two All-Americans from the past two seasons.

“(I) absolutely love the room,” Thivierge said. “Our numbers aren’t where we want them to be. We don’t have a lot of depth in certain weight classes, but the guys that are in here (are) battling hard.”

“Of our six new guys, one is a junior college All-American (and) two others have been national tournament qualifiers,” Thivierge continued. “Every weight class are filled and we’ve got a lot of veterans (that are) not only returning veterans, but transfers.”

“We’re pretty excited about how the season is going to go,” Thivierge said.

The first dual will be at home against North Idaho College. Thivierge said that his lineup is set for the bout and that it will be a good test to see how his team comes out after having wrestled with just one another all offseason long.

“Our lineup is set for this Friday. That’s what (last) Thursday dictated,” Thivierge said. “We learned some things and it’s hard to get engaged when you wrestle each other.”

“You wrestle each other every day in the room and then you go out there for a starting spot,” Thivierge continued.

“Right now, we’re focused on North Idaho,” Thivierge said. “We tied them last year. We won on criteria. We’re looking to go out and make a statement this first dual on Friday night.”

The Lights will be hosting the Cardinals on Friday night inside the Armory Gym for the first meet of the season. The festivities kick off around 6pm.
