Northern Volleyball Drops Frontier Conference Matches This Week

(Helena – Keller Sherman) The Skylights volleyball team fell in their most recent Frontier Conference outings, losing on the road at Carroll College (3-1) and Providence, (3-1).

The first set was tight, but Carroll squeaked it out (25-23) before a dominating (25-12) set two victory. The third set started evenly, but Northern took control after a (7-7) tie, using a (16-11) run to go up (23-18). However, Carroll would not go away quietly, going on a 7-2 run to tie things up at 25-25, but the Skylights scored the next two points to force a fourth set and avoid the sweep.

The 4th set was mostly a back-and-forth affair where neither team led by more than two points, but with the set square at 19 a piece, Carroll closed out the set and match with another late set run, this one to the tune of 6-1 to win the set (25-20) and hold off Northern’s comeback attempt.

Against the Argos, the Skylights took a thrilling (27-25) victory in the opening set, but then the Argos responded with (25-19) and (25-17) wins in the next two sets.

The visiting Argos led by as many as seven points in the fourth set, but the Skylights did not go away quietly, coming all the way back to take the lead and had a set point up (24-23). However, Northern failed to close out the set as the Argos scored the next three points to take the set (26-24) and the match along with it.

With the defeats, the Skylights drop to 6-8 overall and 1-4 in Frontier action. They will next be in action on Thursday as they head to Butte to face Montana Tech in the second meeting between the teams this year. The Orediggers won that one in Armory Gym on September 19th (3-1).
