In another late inning affair at the 2023 NORTHWEST CLASS A REGIONAL BASEBALL TOURNAMENT, the Havre Northstars battled for seven innings with Wyoming’s Powell Pioneers, but came up just short in a comeback attempt, (4-3). The Northstars had four errors and left 11 runners on base in the loss.
Powell got two runs in the third inning and two runs in the fifth inning. The key play was a line drive that was hit in the fifth inning that pushed across the two runs. With a runner on third Trevion Solberg hit a grounder that was fielded by Brody Nanini, who fired home and passed catcher Chason Mader. The latter then tried to throw out Solberg who was at that point going to third base because of the first throwing error and the ball skipped through Ezra Pyle and into left field, allowing Solberg to come in to score a Little League home run.
Havre battled back in the sixth inning, scoring three runs on two walks and a fielder’s choice. Conner Mckay paced the Northstars with four hits in four plate appearances. Havre had a chance to win the ballgame in the seventh inning with runners on second and third and one out, but were retired on a strikeout and a great dive on a grounder at third base by Brock Johnson, who also went 2-for-4 on the night.
Dalton Worstell got the five-out save for the Pioneers. Terek Shipp was on the mound for Havre and gave up four runs with four walks, but did record six strikeouts.
The Northstars will compete on Sunday with weather permitting at 4pm against the CDA Lumbermen of Idaho. Listen HERE on KOJM-610AM with Noah Friedman calling that one from American Legion Field.
