Sunday marked the end of the 2023 regular season for the American Legion Havre Northstars. Five players (Drake Berreth, Kale Reno, Brody Nanini, Lane Kinsella, and Conner Mckay) were honored as part of “Senior Day” at American Legion Field. They delivered for the crowd as part of a doubleheader, winning both contests against the Vauxhall Spurs, (2-1) and (6-1), respectively.
Offense was at a premium for game one, with the main focus on one of those seniors in Reno. He delivered an inspiring performance with a complete game, allowing the one run on three hits and striking out four Spurs batters.
Another senior in Mckay drove in the first run in the bottom of the first inning on a single and Ezra Pyle recorded the other RBI hit.
In the second game, Mckay got the scoring going with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. There would be no runs scored until the Northstars put up a five-spot in the fifth inning when Havre loaded the bases.
Mckay and Jevin Jenkins went back-to-back on RBI singles, Berreth recorded a bases-loaded walk, and Reno had an RBI groundout. Two batters after that, Colter Solomon knocked in Jenkins on a single.
Terek Shipp got the nod on the hill. He went the distance and struck out three Vauxhall players.
Coach Patch Wirtzberger’s team finished the regular season with an overall record of 39 wins, 16 losses, and one tie. Next up for Havre is a trip to the North District Tournament in Vauxhall from July 20-23.
