The Havre basketball teams traveled down to Lockwood for a doubleheader on Thursday night. The Lady Ponies were defeated by the Lions, (52-51). The Pony boys’ were also denied, losing (71-51).
For the Pony girls’ (1-1), they struggled in the first eight minutes, scoring just nine points and allowing one Lockwood player to put up 10 by herself. Havre woke up in the next eight minutes, taking a (31-26) lead into the halftime locker room, led by Tierra Parker’s eight second quarter points. The teams went back and forth in the third quarter, but Lockwood maintained an edge heading into the final frame, (41-40). The fourth quarter was similar to the third with lead changes aplenty and controversial calls. With the Lady Ponies down by one with less than five seconds left, Amaya Jarvis could not get a go-ahead shot to fall. She would be the team’s leading scorer with 11 points. Ariana Gary contributed 10 second half points and Sierra Parker had nine points on her night.
The Havre boys’ (1-1) found themselves down, (10-3) in the early going and were losing, (19-10) at the end of the first with mostly bench players starting the game. By the time the second quarter ended, Havre had as many points at the half as the Lions had after one and it was (36-19) in the blink of an eye. More of the same occurred in the third quarter as Lockwood outscored Havre, (14-10) to make it (50-32) after 24 minutes. The Ponies finally showed signs in the early parts of the fourth, going on a (9-2) run, but faded after that. In the loss, Matt Huse led Havre in scoring with 14 points, while Tre Gary came away with nine points.
