School Board Tables 8th Graders Participating in HS Athletics

(Havre) – The Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees met for the regular monthly meeting on Tuesday Night and discussed and voted on many items of business.

Discussion was held about allowing 8th grade students to participate in sports at Havre High School. The Havre Public Schools administration has recommended that the board allow 8th grade students to participate in the individual sports of cross country, golf, swimming, wrestling, track and field, and tennis. After quite a bit of discussion a motion was made to definitely postpone the administrations recommendation to the July 18th school board meeting. The boar of trustees has questions that they would like Havre Public Schools Activities Director Mark Irvin to answer, and he could not attend the board meeting Tuesday night as he was attending the Class “A” Activities Directors Meeting. Before voting on the motion board members also made the case that they would like to hear from other coaches in the district and community members on this issue. The motion to definitely postpone until the July 18th meeting passed unanimously.

Other items that the Board of Trustees passed unanimously were, the updated safe return to schools and continuity of services plan, out of state travel requests by the Havre High School FFA and Spanish Clubs, increased wages for substitute employees in the district, the 2023-24 school year handbooks at all five schools in the district, creation of three new board committees, ratification of the collective bargaining agreement with the Havre Education Association, a request by Rocky Boy Schools to enter the Havre school district, and renewal of the banking agreement which is required every four years by state law.

The next Havre Public Schools Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Tuesday July 18th, 6:30pm at the Havre Middle School auditorium. This will be the first board meeting for new Havre Public Schools Superintendent Brian Gumm.
