Investigation Underway Regarding Homicide in Box Elder

(Box Elder) According to Hill County Sheriff Jamie Ross, at approximately 1:30 AM this morning, police were dispatched to a shots fired call in the parking lot of the D and L Bar in Box Elder. The first deputies who arrived at the scene found two men shot at the gas pumps.

Darin Bernard Caplette, 41, and Thomas Roderick Yallup, 42, both residents of the Rocky Boy’s Reservation, were transported to the hospital where both died from their injuries.

The Hill County Deputy Sheriffs along with the Cascade County Sheriff’s Detectives, Tribal Police, Chouteau County Deputies and the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation are currently investigating this case.

Sheriff Ross said “The initial information indicates that this was a targeted assault directed at these two men and we don’t have any evidence currently that would indicate a risk to the public at large. Expect to see a large police presence in the Box Elder Area for a considerable time. We have many crime scenes to process and witnesses to interview.”

Since this is a homicide investigation, the bodies will be sent to the Montana State Crime Lab for autopsy. Anyone with information regarding this case should call 406 265 2512.
