ROCKY BOY, Mont. (NMB) – Six months after buffalo were reintroduced on the Rocky Boy’s Reservation, those in charge of managing the herd say that they are flourishing.
Rocky Boy Buffalo Project Chair Melvin Morsette Junior says that the herd has grown from 11 to 14. In addition, a calf was born on the Reservation in late April, representing the first buffalo birth in Rocky Boy in decades.
“It was a historic moment, to say the least. The ranch manager that was on site, he got to record it and everything. It was really exciting. It was exciting for the community, it was exciting for the project. We’ve also had another one hit the ground since then. Things are looking good.”
Vice-Chair Timothy Rosette Jr. says that taking care of the buffalo has been a total team effort.
“A good thing about this is that it’s not just one person, one organization. Like you said, it’s a village to get this going, and that comes through networking and working together.”
Morsette and Rosette say they would like to thank everyone that has put in work to help sustain the return of buffalo on the reservation.
