In the annual “Field Trip Game” on Thursday morning and early afternoon, the MSU-Northern basketball teams showed out for local kids from around the Hi-Line. The Skylights and Lights both defeated the University of Alberta-Augustana.
For the Skylights (4-4), who had their game tip off at 10am local time, the final score was (106-52). Northern got out to a (29-8) lead after one quarter and led by as many as 56 points in times throughout the contest. Two stats that stood out were the Skylights quadrupling the output of bench points, (44-11) and were a plus-15 in points off turnovers. Five Skylights ended the game in double-figures, led by redshirt junior guard L’Tia Lawrence’s 21 points, followed by redshirt junior forward Savannah Toms’ 20 and senior forward Ryley Kehr’s 18 and 9 rebounds. Junior forward Shyann Krass had 14 points and senior guard Ducli SkunkCap finished with 13 to round out the five.
Like the Skylights, the Lights also started the game hot, leading (23-4) after the first media timeout. They were doubling up Alberta-Augustana by halftime, (48-24). Playing without standout forward JJ Thomas and another rebounder in forward Xavier Bailey for the first half, Northern was still were able to control the paint, out-rebounding the Vikings (43-23) and outscoring them in the paint, (46-16). Junior forward Jake Randall was tied with a team-high 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to reach double-double status. Senior guard Zack Martinez chipped in 18 points and senior guard Miles Dalton finished with 15 points. The final scored ended up being (100-64).
