MSU-Northern Skylights basketball lost again to Valley City State, but were able to bounce back quickly by sweeping Dickinson State. New Media Broadcasters caught up with head coach Chris Mouat, who shared his thoughts on the most recent results for his team at the post-Thanksgiving tournament in Dickinson, ND.
“The first game, we really were our own worst enemy,” Mouat said. “We had a 10-point lead at halftime and really just had a poor second half across the board.”
“Credit (Valley City) of course,” Mouat continued. “They played really well and made shots and pressured us into a lot of mistakes.”
“I was really proud of our kids for responding the next day the way that they did, getting up (and) doing their work and then going out and playing in what is a really tough place to play ” Mouat said. “Dickinson at home is always tough. So for us to come away with a split, certainly we’ll take it and run, I guess.”
Another chance will present itself this week when the Skylights host Saint Mary’s University of Calgary. Coach Mouat said this opportunity is much needed before bags are packed for Arizona in two weeks for a big tournament.
“I think (my players) are excited to be at home,” Mouat said. “(They) get a few nights at home in their own bed.”
“We’re really going to focus on ourselves this week,” Mouat continued. “We’re not putting in anything new in or things like that. No new wrinkles for now. We’ll save that for Phoenix.”
“We’ve been executing at a pretty high level. Now it’s a matter of finishing and hitting the shots (when) we have them, and just doing the simple things right,” Mouat said. “Taking care of the ball, getting the first rebound, and just being a little more efficient on offense. I like the direction we’re going.”
The Skylights (4-3) will play against St. Mary’s University at the Armory Gym as part of a Saturday doubleheader for Northern basketball. Tip-off is scheduled for 1pm.
