The MSU-Northern Skylights basketball team played their first tournament game of the season on Tuesday night in a matchup with Embry-Riddle. Northern ended up dropping the contest by the final score of (63-56).
The game was close in the first half with the Skylights trailing by 1, (25-24). Senior point guard Jalen Callender led all scorers with 17 points in a losing effort.
The Skylights will now face two more teams after a day off on Wednesday. They will take on Menlo College on Thursday, followed by William Jessup University on Friday. Head coach Chris Mouat previewed the two teams that Northern will have to close out the Phoenix-Frontier Challenge.
“The next two teams are (Golden State Athletic Conference) from California. (Menlo and Jessup) are in one of the better leagues in the country,” Mouat said. “They’re on the verge of being ranked and will be all throughout the year. They’re going to be big challenges with great athletes.”
“William Jessup early on knocked off Sacramento State, who won the Big Sky Conference last year, so they obviously have some big wins under their belt,” Mouat continued.
