Skylights Basketball Heading to Frontier Conference Tournament

The MSU-Northern Skylights basketball team came off the regular season with back-to-back losses at Providence and Carroll. New Media Broadcasters spoke with head coach Chris Mouat and he broke down the previous results and how the positives will carry into this week’s challenge.

“It was really a mixed bag of results,” Mouat said. “At Providence, we did everything we could to win that game. We played very well. We shot the ball well. We had every right to think we could win that game.”

“That wasn’t as much of a disappointment as Saturday (at Carroll), where we really didn’t do that much right,” Mouat continued.

“We’re taking the good and moving forward and taking the bad and work on trying to get better for Thursday,” Mouat said. “I think we learned a little bit from both games.”

The Skylights will be heading to the Frontier Tournament in Great Falls, which begins Thursday night. The team’s first matchup will be against Rocky Mountain College, a squad they have beaten twice in three tries during 2024. Coach Mouat gave the Lady Bears their flowers, but also said in a one-game season that anything can happen.

“We’ll have a few new wrinkles. They probably will (, too),” Mouat said. “At the end of the day, they’re a really talented team.”

“The first time we beat them, they were without a couple of key players, (but they’re) back now,” Mouat continued. “We were able to beat them with those players, so I think our kids have some confidence, but at the same time, they keep it realistic.”

“Our goal has been to play the best in the end and keep moving forward so (my players) know that anything can happen and put our best foot forward,” Mouat said.

The single-elimination Frontier Conference Basketball Tournament starts with the No. 4 seeded Skylights (11-17, 5-10) and the No. 5 Rocky Mountain College Lady Battlin’ Bears (15-12, 4-11). Tipoff will be around 5pm from the Four Seasons Arena and you can listen to the game on KPQX-92.5FM and HiLineToday.com with Noah Friedman calling the action.
