The MSU-Northern Skylights’ basketball team is coming off of a two-game sweep of Frontier Conference opponents to double their win total against those types of teams from 2022-23. Head coach Chris Mouat walked New Media Broadcasters through how his team was able to battle back late in their most recent game against Rocky Mountain College to pick up the victory, (76-75)
“Rachel (Van Blaricom) started off the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer and a foul and made the free throw,” Mouat said. “We did a lot of things well. We had a lot of turnovers that really were crucial bad ones, but at the same time, we were able to withstand it by getting a few stops on defense.”
“The last three or four possessions, we had to be about perfect and we did a very good job,” Mouat continued. “Rachel made a really nice pass into Shyan (Krass) to set her up so she could get to her left-hand shoulder and finish. Luckily, she was able to make the shot.”
It’ll be more tough sledding for the Skylights as they host a nationally ranked University of Providence team on Thursday night. Coach Mouat praised the upcoming opponent and said what the emphasis has been for his squad as they prepare for another tough matchup.
“Ashlee Maldonado (is) an elite point guard,” Mouat said. “(Freshman forward Keanna) Salave’a (is) just a beat in (the paint). Coach (Bill Himmelberg) does a great job with his team.”
“They’ve got good players around the,” Mouat continued. “It’s going to take a lot (to win). We’re going to have to be very sharp on the boards once again. We can’t turn the ball over.”
“(My team is) going to have to make shots,” Mouat said. “When we’ve made shots, everything has been a little easier on us, but when we’re not shooting the ball well, we make it awful hard like we did with (Montana) Tech.”
The Skylights and Lady Argos will tip off at 5pm on Thursday. Listen to the game on KPQX-92.5FM with Noah Friedman calling the action.
