MSU-Northern Skylights basketball won its first Frontier Conference tournament game in four years after upsetting Montana Tech on Sunday. The team turned around and had to play the No. 1 seeded Rocky Mountain College Lady Battlin Bears on Monday afternoon and the result wasn’t as kind. The Skylights suffered a (61-51) defeat and were eliminated from playoff contention.
Northern came out on a tear against a second straight top-30 team, limiting the Lady Bears to eight first-quarter points while scoring 16. The lead was maintained into the locker room as the Skylights held onto a (27-23) edge. The Lady Bears only hit one 3-point field goal in the first half.
Rocky made the adjustments at the break to get themselves back into it, going on an (11-2) run to start the third. The Skylights battled back and made more field goals in the last two minutes of the frame than they had in the previous eight and we were tied at 38 heading into the fourth.
That’s where the tides turned as the Lady Bears outscored Northern, (23-13) for the final 10 minutes. Sydney Dethman had a game-high 25 for the Bears, while Gracee Lekvold finished with 14 and Iliana Moran put in 11.
In their final game of the season, it was the junior leaders of Canzas HisBadHorse and Taya Trottier leading the way with 16 points apiece. The Skylights end the 2024-25 season with a (13-17) overall record and will lose five seniors in McKenzie Long, Emma Wass, Shyan Krass, Savannah Toms, and Katelynn Forner.
