It’s been a rough three seasons for MSU-Northern head football coach Jerome Souers. The Lights have been victorious in two total games out of 30 tries, but have momentum from the (19-13) win over Rocky Mountain College to close out the 2024 season.
New Media Broadcasters asked Souers following the Rocky game what his team showed him and how the steady improvement he talked about week in and week out came to light.
“The biggest thing was heart and a belief in each other. They showed so much fight,” Souers said. “I couldn’t be prouder of them.”
“Every week, we got better. I thought our offense really came out (and) moved the ball well,” Souers continued. “Defensively, we came up with some key plays in the end.”
“I’m just really happy for our team,” Souers said. “Such a better way to go into the offseason: with a win.”
There is a lot to build from when it comes to what MSU-Northern can achieve under Souers and his coaching staff. He outlined what he wants his teams to look like moving forward.
“It really was a picture of what the future needs to look like for us,” Souers said. “We need to be a ball control offense. We have to be calculated in the way that we run the ball and take our shots when we have them.”
“Defensively (, we need to) play more mistake-free football,” Souers continued. “We figured out a way to win. You can build on it.”
“The improvement every week the last time we played and won has been steady,” Souers said.
Souers took some time to reflect on what his last three years have been like in charge. He said he’s reinvigorated and can’t wait to get started again as he has hits the recruiting trail.
“When you switch philosophies as drastic as we did from last year to this year, it’s a huge deal,” Souers said. “Things we learned in a good way and things we have to work on for next year.”
“(It’s) been a long stretch,” Souers continued. “In the last three years have been a lot of hard work (and) a lot of figuring things out.”
“But I think we have a better direction of with we’re doing,” Souers said. “We actually have a foothold. I’m excited about next year.”
