(Hi-Line) The Student and Teacher Advancement for Results and Success Act, or STARS Act, will be sent to Governor Gianforte’s desk this week, where it’s expected to be signed into law.
Among this bills many goals includes a state fund to facilitate raises in teacher pay, which many proponents say will increase competitiveness for rural school teaching positions and create incentives for teachers to work those positions.
For the Hi-Line, the passage of this act may directly affect the amount of tax dollars local school districts, like Havre Public Schools, will need to use. HPS is currently running a levy to raise over $160,000; Superintendent Brian Gum has stated in the past that the passing of the STARS act will lower that amount, which would reduce burden on the tax payer.
