The Chinook football team came out with a purpose last week, beating up on Cascade, (48-12). New Media Broadcasters asked head coach Mike Jones about the fundamentals he kept preaching leading up to the game and how going back to the basics worked out in a big way.
“Ah, that’s the thing right there is fundamentals,” Jones said. “We came out and we blocked really well. I think we rallied to the football defensively (and) made some good tackles with team tackling, not just individual.”
“That’s just the solid base to build from,” Jones continued. “I told (the players), those two things are going to put them in that game and it worked really well.”
The Sugarbeeters will get to return home and play at Hoon Field, hosting Choteau this week. Jones discussed what his team will have to do to earn a quality win against a Bulldogs team that has started the season off strong, putting up 92 points against Rocky Boy and holding Shelby to just six.
“Defensively, we just have to make sure we’re doing our jobs and reading our keys,” Jones said. “(Choteau likes) to do some stuff with motion and things like that where we just have to make sure we do what we’re taught and then what we practice.”
“They’re going to try to do some tricky, flashy stuff and we just have to stay home and do the fundamentals again really well,” Jones continued.
