HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – After being postponed for two years due to COVID, the Annual Sweetgrass Society Powwow is making a comeback this weekend at the Armory Gymnasium at MSU-Northern.
The free event is student-led, and Sweetgrass Society President Tallen Oats says they can’t wait to put on a show for the community.
“It’s super exciting to be able to bring the Powwow back after having COVID for so long and not being able to have celebrations or gatherings. And we’re super excited to have everybody back and see everybody dancing and all the happy faces.”
Little River Institute Director Erica McKeon-Hanson adds that the event is a total community effort and takes many months to put together.
“We have many sponsors of different dance categories from the community, businesses in the community, families within our community, and Tribal communities. It’s really going to be the first time we’re coming together since prior to COVID.”
The emcee will be Gayle Skunkcap, while the Arena Director will be Walter Runsabove. The sound will be from Wind Dancer Tunes and the host drum is Assiniboine Cree.
Grand entry times are Friday at 7 PM and Saturday at 1 and 7 PM. Everyone is invited, and a food truck and vendors will be on hand. Facemasks will be available for those who would like one.
