Tax Relief, Minimum Wage and SNAP Changes

BILLINGS, Mont. – As 2026 approaches, Montanans are preparing for several financial and policy changes set to take effect. These include property tax relief for some homeowners, a minimum wage increase and significant updates to SNAP benefits.

Beginning with property taxes, a new state homestead tax exemption could lower bills for thousands of residents. The Montana Department of Revenue announced that enrollment opened December 1 for homeowners and owners of long-term rental properties.

Montana’s minimum wage will increase by 30 cents to $10.85 an hour in 2026. This increase is mandated by a 2006 state law linking the minimum wage to the consumer price index, ensuring it rises with inflation.

For SNAP recipients, significant changes are on the horizon. A new federal law allows states to use USDA-approved waivers to restrict what SNAP benefits can purchase, including certain sugary drinks, candy and other non-nutritious items.
