MONTREAL (NMB) – Although many leaders in the United States are eager to see the border with Canada reopen to non-essential travel, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says that won’t happen for “quite a while.”
Trudeau made the remarks at a speech in British Columbia on Thursday, shortly after Canada dropped a quarantine requirement for fully vaccinated Canadians entering the country.
The Canada-US border has been closed to non-essential travel since March 2020, and will remain closed through at least July 21st. And with Trudeau’s recent comments, the closure looks like it will be extended.
Trudeau claims that opening the border prematurely could cause a spike in COVID-19 in Canada, potentially leading to them reinforcing some restrictions.
Over 56 percent of Americans and nearly 70 percent of Canadians have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
