UM Launches New Initiative to Help Cut Down Screen Time

(Missoula) – The University of Montana has launched a new campus-wide initiative called “Be Here with Brick” to help students and staff cut down on screen time.

The university is placing physical “Brick” devices across campus, including the Mansfield Library and student residence halls. Users can tap their smartphones against these devices to temporarily lock distracting apps and social media.

Organized by the Curry Health Center, the program aims to combat stress, loneliness, and poor sleep by creating intentional spaces for face-to-face connection and focus. Students can also check out devices for the semester or use a free app to participate.
