HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – With the weather beginning to warm up and the summer angling season not far away, the Fresno Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited says they are working to make events more family oriented.
Local Walleyes Unlimited Board member Josh Parrow says this includes a proposed kids-specific fishing program.
“People are always asking around Havre what they can have for summer events for their kids. So we’re looking, it’s in the works, we’re just going to make a simple program where people can contact us as far as Walleyes Unlimited and if you’re at work and the kid wants to go out for the summer and needs something to do, we’re just going to take them fishing for half the day. We aren’t going to charge anything. If they are 12-and-older they will have to have an FWP fishing license. If they are under that age, they don’t. We will try to provide life jackets. If they have their own life jackets, that’d be great to bring them. And it’s just about getting kids out and getting a chance to go fishing when they probably wouldn’t usually get the chance to.”
This plan remains in its infancy stage, and there is a lot to do if this program is going to become a reality.
Tournaments this year will include a new category just for children 11-and-under.
“They can still win against the full adults, the full teams, but they are also going to be in their own category. Kind of even the playing field a little bit for those guys that are fishing against 17-year-old kids that can drive a boat themselves and fish just as well as any adult. So that idea was pitched to kind of make it more fun for these kids to actually be involved and be in their own category, get a chance to win some more stuff.”
Parrow says several different tournaments are set on area water bodies this year, including:
- Crooked Creek Walleye Tournament by the Dam May 13th-14th
- Fresno Challenge at Fresno Reservoir June 11th-12th
- Sunrise Tournament at Canyon Ferry June 25th-26th
- Tiber Tournament at Tiber Reservoir July 16th-17th
