Whitewater Man Killed in Crash ID’d

PHILLIPS COUNTY, Mont. (NMB) – The man that was killed in in a single-vehicle crash in Phillips County early Saturday morning has been identified.

The Phillips County Sheriff’s Office says the victim was 48-year-old Earl Lawrence Pewitt of Whitewater.

Authorities were notified of the crash at 12:45 AM, which occurred on Stage Coach Road, about 15 miles south of US Highway 2.

According to the crash report, a 1999 GMC Sierra Truck was traveling southbound when the driver failed to properly negotiate a right-hand curve on a downhill grade. The vehicle then ran off the left-hand side of the gravel road, rolled multiple times, and landed in a ditch.

Pewitt, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the vehicle and declared dead at the scene. Trooper Cade Hill estimates that the man landed about 20 feet from the vehicle. There were no other occupants in the vehicle.

Alcohol and excessive speed are both suspected in the crash.
