(Hi-Line) Nationwide the winter wheat crop has been labeled as “troubled”, with no current crops in the “excellent” quality designation and with many planters reportedly having not seeded yet amid dry weather conditions.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with Executive Vice President of the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee to see how the crop is holding up locally, compared to national reports.
“I think they’re a little overdone. I’m a little bit skeptical that the new crop winter wheat is in that poor a condition in Montana, particularly around Havre, I think the Havre winter wheat is in pretty good shape because you had some fall moisture and decent seeding conditions”
Most Montana planters will have seeded their crops by this point in time, and Kupfner says that depending on how the global market goes, we could see wheat prices drop as they’ve done the past two years.
