(Washington D.C.) – Yellowstone National Park is losing its top leader. After nearly three decades of federal service and eight years at the helm of America’s first national park, Superintendent Cam Sholly is stepping down in late September. Sholly will join the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation as its new chief operating officer.
During his tenure, Sholly managed a massive one-point-five billion dollar investment in major infrastructure and conservation projects. He also guided the park through record-breaking crowds, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the devastating twenty-twenty-two floods. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum praised Sholly’s dedicated leadership, stating it leaves Yellowstone stronger, safer, and better prepared for the future.
The National Park Service plans to name an interim superintendent soon while beginning the search for a permanent replacement.
