WHITEHALL, Mont. (NMB) – A 52-year-old man from Manhattan, Montana was killed and a 35-year-old woman from Belgrade was injured Monday morning near Whitehall after the van they were in swerved and struck a school bus head on.
The Montana Highway Patrol reports that the two occupants of the school bus, the 29-year-old female driver from Whitehall and a seven-year old boy, were uninjured.
Drug use is a suspected factor in the crash, which occurred at 6:59 AM, when the Manhattan man was driving a Chrysler Town & Country westbound on Montana Highway 2. While negotiating a sharp right hand corner, the van crossed the center line and struck the eastbound school bus. Both vehicles came to rest shortly after impact in the middle of the roadway.
The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene, while the passenger was transported to a hospital for treatment. Neither was wearing a seatbelt.
The road was clear and dry.
