HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – On Thursday evening, the Hill County Suicide Awareness Coalition and Hill County Mental Health Local Advisory Council will host their 5th Annual Suicide Awareness Walk.
Activities begin at 6:30 pm at the MSU-Northern clock tower and include a remembrance wall. Speeches from the community will take place at 7 pm with a gentle walk around campus to follow.
Amber Spring, Chair of the Hill County Suicide Awareness Coalition, says this annual event provides a vital outlet for community members to speak openly about their experiences.
“Unfortunately, I think suicide (still is) a little bit stigmatized and uncomfortable for some people to talk about,” Spring said. “So this becomes a safe place for those who have lost someone to feel like they are surrounded by people that they can feel safe talking to.”
Following the walk, local writer Mark Cichosz will present a short play entitled ‘It’s Time,’ at the MAT Theatre on campus.
“The play is just about suicide and the way those thoughts and feeling affect both the people that are considering (suicide) as well as the people that they leave behind,” Spring said. “So we’re excited to do that and to have a discussion afterward if people have questions or things that they want to talk about as a community, we will have people available for them to talk to.”
There is no cost to attend the event and there will be free t-shirts while supplies last thanks to donations from the community.
