CHESTER, Mont. (NMB) – Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks will have a public information session on Monday, September 9th in Chester regarding Chronic Wasting Disease and a planned CWD hunt nearby this fall.
A press release says the meeting will begin at 7 PM in the Chester High School auditorium and will focus on CWD updates in the area and a Moffat Bridge special CWD hunt.
Two years ago, FWP discovered CWD in deer south of Billings and north of Chester. CWD is an always fatal disease of deer, elk and moose and if left unmanaged, can cause significant population declines over time. It is not known to affect humans or livestock.
In FWP Region 4, hunting districts 400 and 401 have been designated as part of the Northern Montana CWD Management Zone.
To prevent the spread of the disease, the whole carcass, whole head, brain or spinal column from any deer, elk or moose harvested in within a CWD Management Zone may not be removed from that zone, unless the animal has tested negative for CWD.
