HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Havre’s City Council met Tuesday night for the start of their annual budget meeting. Over two dozen people attended as the Council passed several items, including the second reading of an ordinance change regarding filling vacant City Council seats in between elections. They now require a resume as part of that application.
The Council also passed a resolution canceling the November 5th elections for uncontested races. Erik Meis in Ward 4 will be the only City Council Candidate on the ballots.
They also approved a drawdown for over $27,300 for the Bullhook Stormdrain project. Public Works Director Dave Peterson said that as long as their funding comes in as expected, the contractors plan on finishing the project by early to mid October.
The Council confirmed the appointment of Jayce Barclay as a probationary police officer and approved a street closure in front of Old Station Brewery on Friday during Festival Days for a street dance hosted by Sax Cadillac.
At the end of the meeting, some members of the public addressed the Council regarding different issues. A few people got up to support AirBnB’s, but Mayor Tim Solomon told them it was not the appropriate place, as the issue has been moved to the Ordinance Committee. The Committee will meet on September 16th, after the next regular City Council meeting. There were also two people who asked the Council to consider reducing speed limits in their neighborhoods. Mayor Solomon referred them to Police Chief Gabe Matosich.
After the meeting, the Council opened their annual budget meeting and will meet again at 6 PM Wednesday night. The time in between gives the public a chance to check out the city budget. They will have the final reading for levying the taxes for streets, street lights, Bullhook maintenance, and solid waste services.
