CHINOOK, Mont. (NMB) – On Friday, the Blaine County Health Department and the Montana Department of Environmental Quality announced that Cow Creek Reservoir was closed due to an algal bloom found near the north shore. Blaine County Sanitarian Ron Andersen says the blue-green algae that can produce dangerous cyanotoxins was found in the reservoir last week southwest of Chinook.
To be safe, Cow Creek Reservoir has been closed to people, pets and livestock as the algae can cause health concerns. Andersen said that they will retest the reservoir next week and then decide on whether or not to reopen it.
The algae blooms float on the surface of the water and may look like pea soup, grass clippings, or green latex paint.
