GREAT FALLS, Mont. (NMB) – A Box Elder man accused of assaulting and strangling a woman on the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation pleaded guilty on November 1st to domestic assault by a habitual offender, according to U.S. Attorney Kurt Alme.
Henry James Daychild, Jr., 41, admitted to the crime during a hearing before U.S. District Judge Brian Morris. His sentencing is set for February 13th, 2020. Daychild was detained pending further proceedings.
Daychild faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine and three years of supervised release.
The prosecution said in court records that Daychild assaulted the victim on May 23rd, 2018 by hitting her and strangling her multiple times. The victim lost consciousness twice during the assault. She escaped to a neighbor’s home to call the police and sought medical care. The victim sustained serious injuries in the past as a result of Daychild’s abuse.
Daychild has four prior tribal domestic violence convictions.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Cobell is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the FBI and the Chippewa Cree Criminal Investigations.
