WASHINGTON, D.C. (NMB) – U.S. Senator Steve Daines has announced that his bipartisan PIRATE Act has been signed into law.
The PIRATE Act, which stands for Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement, allows the Federal Communications Commission to take stronger action to reduce pirate radio broadcasters.
A press release says the bill allows the FCC to conduct enforcement sweeps, create a database and reporting requirements, and sets a fine of up to $2 million for pirate broadcasters.
Daines introduced the bill back in April 2019 alongside Democratic Senator Gary Peters.
In a statement, Daines said he was, “Honored to have gotten this bipartisan bill signed into law on behalf of Montana local radio and rural broadcasters. (I’m) thankful to President Trump for taking action to stop illegal pirate radio operations and hold them accountable to the law.”
