The United States Department of Agriculture has launched a new initiative aimed at rebuilding the nation’s cattle herd, which officials say has hit a seventy-five-year low. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the “Ranchers First Initiative,” a package of measures designed to support independent livestock producers and reinforce the domestic food supply chain. A key component is a new insurance option called the “BRAND” endorsement. This tool allows cattle producers to ensure the economic value of keeping heifers for breeding rather than selling them for market slaughter.
The plan also offers emergency funding flexibility for pastures damaged by natural disasters like wildfires, and creates a guaranteed loan program to expand independent, regional meat processing facilities. Finally, the USDA will prioritize American-raised beef in federal procurement for government institutions, while expanding recruitment programs for military veterans entering the ranching industry.
