CHESTER, Mont. (NMB) – Liberty County Public Health is holding a ‘Get the Wheels Turning’ event this Saturday in Chester in honor of National Bike Month.
Public Health Director Melissa Kantorowicz says the free event will offer bicycle checks and repairs, helmets, door prizes, donuts, coffee and juice.
All helmets at the event will be provided free of charge, and anyone that doesn’t get a helmet can get fitted to receive a free one at a later date.
“We contacted Benefis Health Systems out of Great Falls, and they have a helmet program. So we reached out to them and they provided us with free helmets to dispense. They are BMX helmets, toddler helmets, and if there is a need for more, we’ll measure and get the individuals helmets that need them.”
Roosevelt Service will be providing numerous services for anyone looking to get their bikes checked and/or repaired.
“Roosevelt Service is going to provide the service of checking bike tires, changing tubes, lubing chains and everything like that too. So lots of local businesses are helping out, including The Well Coffee House, which is providing coffee.”
There will also be a drawing for a free bike courtesy of First Bank of Montana. The actual bike will be selected following the drawing to ensure the winner is able to use it. This is to make sure an adult doesn’t end up with a kids bike, or vice versa.
The event will take place from 9 AM-Noon at Roosevelt Service, located at 219 East Washington Avenue in Chester.
Funds to put on the event were made possible through a Maternal Child Block Grant.
“With that, there is a FIMR part of it. FIMR stands for Fetal Infant death Mortality Review team, which any death that happens within Liberty County, we go through to create preventative measures to see how we could have prevented this incident. In the past, we have really focused on helmets and safety in regards to riding bikes. This year, with COVID, it kind of got hard with events being canceled. So we reached out and put together this event…It’s important to keep your head safe. We can’t replace a noggin. So that’s one of the key things. And just educating and getting people out there to put some light besides COVID.”
