HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – After going virtual last year due to the pandemic, the Northern Agricultural Research Center’s (NARC) Field Day will return to the standard in-person format on Tuesday, June 29th.
NARC Superintendent Darrin Boss says he’s thrilled that this free event will return to an in-person format
“It’s just an exciting time that we’re going to be able to do this. We’re actually hoping for almost a record turnout this year. I don’t know if we’ll be there – (it’s our) 100 year anniversary – but that’s what we’re planning for. 300-500 people coming to the station.”
Each attendee will have the opportunity to attend two of the four tours that will be set up.
“(One of) tours will be basically wrapped around all of the crop breeding programs. We’ll have our barley breeders, spring wheat breeders, durum breeder, and the breeder that does pulses and our winter wheat breeder. Each one of those breeders will be on a tour and they’ll be able to talk about all the newest and greatest varieties their developing and what’s happening and what’s working in north-central Montana.”
The other tours will focus on soil and soil twists, water and irrigation, cropping systems and rotations, and livestock operations.
“We’re going to talk about potentially individually supplementing heifers maybe differently than mature cows on native range while they are grazing. We are going to talk about projects that are getting wrapped up about residual feed intake, beef cattle efficiency on the mixed prairie and how those are interacting with reproduction, and we’re going to talk about how livestock producers are becoming more and more integrated with precision agriculture.”
Attendees can speak with tour guides for tours they didn’t have time to attend during dinner.
Registration begins at 3 PM at Fort Assiniboine, and the dinner is set to start at 7:15 PM.
