HARLEM, Mont. (NMB) – A former instructor at Aaniiih Nakota College, Jennifer Owens is the third candidate to enter the race for Mayor of Harlem.
Owens, 42, is a freelance writer who represents Ward 1 on the City Council and says her background in education is part of what would make her a good fit for the role.
“My communication skills are so adaptable. I’m always eager to listen and learn from the people that I share a community with to find out what’s important to them first, and then see if it’s possible that there is any way I can be of service.”
During her time on the Council, Owens says she’s worked with employees from the city to address concerns of residents.
“Including the dogs at-large. At one point, was a little bit out of hand, I think. And now that seems to be under control thanks to (Public Works Director) Dale (Cornell) and the Public Works guys. And then I know right now we’re also working, (Clerk-Treasurer) Becky (Schroeder) and (Utility/Court Clerk) Crystal (Zellmer) and I, as well as some other Council people, on getting a Transportation Alternatives grant next year to improve some infrastructure for sidewalks. And we’re also looking at addressing some of the Decay Ordinance violations and some of the tax delinquent properties in our area. And I feel that with the support of voters in Harlem, if I can become the Mayor here, I’d like to continue working on these types of projects just to make our community safer and more friendly to the children, the adults, and the senior citizens and elders that live in our area.”
The two other candidates enter the race are City Council President Joseph Patrick-Wertz and Kim Hansen, formerly a Mayor and Montana State Senator.
