HELENA, Mont. (NMB) – The fight over how to draw Montana’s two congressional districts is underway.
Montana will be receiving a second seat in the U.S. House of Representatives beginning in 2022 due to the state’s increase in population, and the commission tasked with drawing the districts met for several hours in Helena on Friday.
The commission features five members – two Democrats, two Republicans and a non-partisan chairwoman.
The commission is still waiting for complete population data from the Census Bureau, but in the meantime, they spent Friday debating the criteria and goals of the redistricting process.
Goals that were agreed to included minimizing the division of municipalities and reservations, as well as creating districts that don’t disproportionately favor one party.
