ZORTMAN, Mont. (NMB) – The Bureau of Land Management has announced that a prescribed fire operation will take place this Thursday and Friday, December 9th and 10th, at Camp Creek near Zortman.
The decision to conduct the burn this week was made due to recent snow accumulation and the favorable weather forecast.
As a safety measure, BLM’s North Central Montana District fuels program staff will conduct a test fire at around 10 AM on Thursday before proceeding with the entire low-complexity prescribed burn.
The Camp Creek fuels-management pile burn consists of about 25-30 acres of ponderosa pine hand piles created during a multi-year hazardous fuels reduction project. The BLM says the burn will promote forest health and reduce hazardous fuels by creating a shaded fuel break near the Camp Creek Campground and the town of Zortman.
The prescribed burn is expected to be completed within one to two days, depending upon actual site and weather conditions.
