HAVRE, Mont. (NMB) – Sunday’s Hill County 4-H Livestock Auction at the Great Northern Fair was a massive success, smashing last year’s sales record.
Hill County MSU-Extension Agent Colleen Pegar says 60 animals were sold for a total of $248,000, with a scholarship plaque selling for $10,500.
“I think it means that the kids are doing an excellent job with their projects. The community members are coming out and supporting these kids phenomenally. And with the prices of everything going up, the prices of feed and everything like that, I think these kids made a little bit of money to put away for college or whatever else they are going to do for 4-H.”
The averages are:
- 1 goat for $8/pound
- 26 beef for $4.93/pound
- 8 sheep for $10.88/pound
- 25 swine for $10.60/pound
Pegar says these impressive figures show the strength of 4-H in Hill County.
“It’s a great program to be a part of. Not only from a life skills perspective, but also from a business perspective as well. These kids are going out and talking to businesses to get people to come and buy at the sale, as well. So I don’t think we’d have the prices that we had without the bidders that are in the stands.”
Sales from the auction go back to the 4-H kids that raised the animals, with many often choosing to save the money for college.
