A Montana wildlife refuge will be receiving part of $10 million in funding from a bipartisan infrastructure law for fiscal year 2023, dispersed through the US Fish and WIldlife Service.
Selected projects involve the Sagebrush Conservation Design, which calls for a Defend and Grow the Core approach. The design starts with core habitats for sage brush, expanding outward into degraded areas.
For Montana, $70,000 has been allotted to the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge to combat encroachment of Japanese Brome. Herbicidal treatments will be paired with untreated infestation areas as well as areas of native sage brush understory, to help determine how effective restoration efforts will be, and impacts upon non targeted areas. This project will complement other ongoing work in the area.
