The MSU-Northern Skylights Coach Chris Mouat has announced the signing of Karina Cabrera who is set to join the Skylights this fall. Cabrera, a 5-foot-6 guard, is coming off a two-year career at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, California.
Mouat spoke with New Media Broadcasters on Thursday and said that Cabrera is a two-way player.
“She’s a good shooter (and) good defender (and) very athletic,” Mouat said. “She just knows how to put the ball in the hole.”
“In one game, she hit 12 threes,” Mouat continued. “She can absolutely shoot with range. So I like her offensive ability but just as much her ability to play on the defensive end.”
Orange Coast College finished 33-1 and won the California Community College Athletic Association title. In that season, Cabrera averaged 15.3 points per game and was named to the All-Orange Empire Conference Team for a second straight season. Shooting 35% from the field, 33% from the three-point line, and 74% from the free throw line with 2.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds per game.
Cabrera joins Taycee Harper and McKenzie Long as recent recruit pickups for the Skylights who had success at different levels of college basketball. Coach Mouat said Cabrera fits that profile perfectly for this team.
“We want kids who know how to win and those kids are in our program,” Mouat said. “The more success they have, the more they get used to it (and) the more they infect it. Yeah, we want kids from winning programs (and) these guys are all definitely from winning programs.”
The Skylights continue to work hard to rebound from their (8-21) 2022-2023 season.
