The Havre Northstars wrapped up the Magris Invitational by playing two games on Sunday. The Northstars split the pair, losing (3-2) to the Bitterroot Red Sox before bouncing back to mercy-rule the Cody Cubs (9-1) in five innings.
Bitterroot scored two runs in the third inning on an error and base-loaded walk. Brandon Brenneman didn’t allow a run in 3.1 innings for the Red Sox before being relieved by Cash Lawrence, who was cruising into the seventh inning.
That’s when Brody Nanini tied the game on a 2-run single that scored Tyson Brandon and Lane Kinsella. Bitterroot made a pitching change and went with Sawyer Townsend to get out of the inning. With the go-ahead run at second base in the form of Nanini, Connor McKay ended up grounding into a double play to end the frame.
Heartbreak for Havre as Bitterroot was able to win the game in the bottom of the seventh on a walk-off walk.
The Northstars were determined to get back in the win column and did just that immediately in the second game. Havre did its damage in the first two innings, scoring 3 runs in the first and six runs in the second. McKay and Terek Shipp each had multi-hit games, while Drake Berreth contributed the game’s only multi-RBI moment with a 2-run double.
Nanini was on the mound in this one and went four innings, giving up one run on three hits and picked up a strikeout in the win.
The Northstars went (5-2) in their seven-game stretch, now improving their record to (13-10-1) on the season.
