After a tough loss on Saturday against Eastern Oregon, the MSU-Northern Lights football team is now preparing for a trip to Caldwell, ID to meet with Frontier Conference standout College of Idaho.
New Media Broadcasters caught up with Lights head coach Jerome Souers, who spoke of some of the improvements seen during Saturday’s game.
“The hard part about this game is that you get measured in wins and losses,” Souers said. “If you’re not winning, you have to find where your improvement is.”
“I thought our offensive line improved. That helped give Mason (Dionne) some room to run,” Souers continued. “If we get a good run game to go with a consistent passing game, we’ll be more balanced on offense.”
“I thought we moved the ball better,” Souers said. “I think we need to be improved in the red zone, which has been an emphasis point for us this week.”
Due to injury, Northern had to go to their third string quarterback, freshman Ashton Platt from Great Falls, during Saturday’s game. Coach Souers gave his thoughts on the difficulty of inconsistency at the position.
“It’s tough to prepare an offense when you have changes at signal caller,” Souers said. “Oakley Kopp has been playing with great courage, but he needs to take a break (and) let his body rest up.”
“The same is true for Dante (Maiuri),” Souers continued. “We’ll see how he is feeling,”
“In the meantime, we will invest in Ashton Platt as a youngster,” Souers said. “He’s a very talented quarterback and this is part of the game, and we have to learn to deal with it.”
The Lights are on the road this week, squaring off against the College of Idaho Coyotes at 1pm on Saturday afternoon. The game will be airing on KPQX, your home for MSU-Northern Sports.
