(Havre) – With the recent rise break-ins and theft in Havre New Media Broadcasters sat down with Lieutenant Lucas Ames of the Havre City Police Department to talk about the thefts and break-ins.
“Thefts are definitely a common thing in Havre we’re always responding to thefts whether its at a residence or a vehicle. Some things you can do to prevent thefts especially in vehicles, the big thing is to lock your doors. Most of the vehicle break in are just a theft of opportunity where people are checking door handles. So, if you lock your vehicles 90% of them going to be prevented that way. Make sure you’re always taking firearms out of your vehicle just be careful take everything valuable and bring it inside. As far as thefts from home on your own property, lock your house doors if you have any sheds or outbuildings make sure those are locked and secured. If you have security cameras make sure they are in working order, make sure you know how to use your cameras and make sure they’re pointed so the important things are covered. So those are just some things that can definitely help prevent thefts.”
He goes on to talk about why there has been a rise in thefts.
“I would say that a lot of thefts are just , its an opportunity. People see the opportunity there and take it. In Havre and Hill County we have a severe drug and alcohol addiction problem and a lot of thefts stem from that. they’re trying to get their fix, you know, and they’ll steal what ever they can to sell it to be able to get that fix.”
