The MSU-N Basketball programs had their season openers on Saturday night with both teams getting victories over Concordia University of Edmonton. The Skylights won, (79-54). Ryley Kehr led Northern with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Savannah Toms had her way inside with 18 and 6. McKenzie Long provided a spark in the first half with four 3-pointers. The Skylights out rebounded the Thunder, (44-22).
The Skylights picked up win No. 3 on the season and will face Valley City State University on Sunday around 3pm.
As for the Lights (6-2), they also dominated in a (93-60) win. Dae’Kwon Watson and Zack Martinez continued to shine for the Lights, combining for 40 points. JJ Thomas chipped in with 18, 14 of those coming in the second half. In the first half, Northern committed zero turnovers.
The Lights will be in action on Tuesday in an exhibition against UM. Both teams have their “Field Trip Game” this Thursday against University of Alberta-Augustana. The Skylights will play at 10am, followed by the Lights around noon.
