The MSU-N wrestling team has a busy weekend ahead of them. The Lights will travel to Reno, NV for the “Reno Tournament of Champions”. This road trip is particularly special for Lights wrestling coach Tyson Thivierge, whose first head coaching position was in nearby Carson City. He reflected on his time there and said what his connections have been doing since he left for his current job back in 2008.
“The hospitality room is run by kids whose dads I have coached,” Thivierge said. “My former wrestlers are coaching at the high school level now. I get to see quite a few of them.”
“Every single year, (we get together and have) $25 All-You-Can-Eat sushi for an hour. It’s a dang good time,” Thivierge continued. “We always focus on that when we get together. There’s a great community down there and (me and my wife) are fortunate that we’ve met a lot of great people.”
The Lights have duals with St. Ambrose University and Eastern Oregon University to kick off their competitions. Thivierge said his team will have an upper hand because he knows his competition well on the other side for completely different reasons.
“It’s kind of a fun one on Friday because I get to wrestle both my former assistant coaches (and) they’re both head coaches now, so there are ties there,” Thivierge said. “It makes it fun and it makes it competitive.”
“We lost for the first time ever to Eastern Oregon last year, so we’re trying to get that back,” Thivierge continued. “They’ve got a great squad.”
“(St. Ambrose is) building,” Thivierge said. “We want to make a statement before the (NWAC National Duals). We’d like to end this 2023 season on a high note with both those dual victories and then performing well at the (Tournament of Champions) on Sunday.”
The “Tournament of Champions” will take place all day on Sunday. Stay up to date on results at HiLineToday.com and throughout the weekend sports reports.
