The Havre boys’ basketball team is undefeated through the first three games of the season, most recently knocking off 2022-23 Class ‘B’ runner-up Malta on Tuesday night.
Blue Ponies coach WaLynn Burgess told New Media Broadcasters what led to his team’s (15-3) run to close out the Malta game.
“The belief in each other (and the players) have a really good team chemistry right now,” Burgess said. “Knowing that we can knock down shots when we get them, we believe in anybody that we throw on the court can score the ball.”
“They kept battling and we just kept knocking down shots,” Burgess continued. “It was a good game overall.”
The attention now shifts to a back-to-back this weekend as the first annual “East-West Showdown” sees the Blue Ponies battle Whitefish and Loyola. Coach Burgess gave the listeners a scouting report on the two teams who Havre has a shot at beating.
“That Whitefish game will be fun,” Burgess said. “We’ve been watching them on film this week and getting ready for them. They’ve got some bigger guys, so it’ll be a good test for us.”
“Knowing the Loyola team, that was a squad that won the (Class ‘B’) state championship over Malta last year. They’ve already beaten three Class ‘A’ teams this (season),” Burgess continued. “They beat a good Columbia Falls teams who I think is one of the better teams out of the west side of the Class ‘A’.
“(Loyola) beat them by 12 last week and now they’re coming (to Havre),” Burgess said. “They just have talent and athletes all around the floor (and) kids that can play up and down the floor (and) shoot shots.”
The Blue Pony boys’ tip off with Whitefish at 3:30pm on Friday, followed by an approximate 4:30pm tip on Saturday against Loyola. Catch the Saturday game on KOJM-610AM with Noah Friedman behind the mic.
