The MSU-Northern basketball programs are going to use their day off on Friday to treat kids in the Havre community to a basketball camp. Kids in kindergarten through eighth grade will be eligible to participate.
Skylights Basketball coach Chris Mouat said that the camp will be a fun way for the Havre children to meet some of the members of the teams so that they can draw inspiration for what their future might look like.
“We’ve done it off and on for a number of years and the turnout has always been excellent for the boys and girls,” Mouat said. “I just think it’s a fun time for them to interact with our players, teach them some basketball skills, and try to provide a day of fun for them.”
“I think we have some really good role models, both on the men’s and women’s side; some people you can look up to and maybe want to be like someday,” Mouat continued. “I think that’s probably the biggest outcome you get (at these camps).”
Lights’ Coach Shawn Huse emphasized that this camp will be different from the summer camps because those don’t consist of everyone on the teams, whereas this camp will see the majority of players affiliated with Northern basketball since it is during their season.
“I think it’s another good way to get out of the house,” Huse said. “It’s having all our guys and all our girls here that is going to make this more fun.”
“It’s a little bit different here than what it is in the summer when a lot of (players) aren’t able to make it all the way back here for camp. (This time,) they’re all going to be ready to work with the campers and have some fun and get a t-shirt and do some things for little prizes.”
Camp for kindergarten-2nd grade will be from 8am-10:30am. Grades 3-5 will be from 10:30am-1pm and 6th through 8th grade camp will be from 1pm-3:30pm. Registration will begin 30 minutes before each session.
