The MSU-Northern Skylights basketball team (4-7) is back home to try and snap a three-game losing streak.
New Media Broadcasters spoke with Skylights’ coach Chris Mouat ahead of the contests and he talked about the challenges of preparing on a short week after coming off the Christmas break.
“We had to give our kids just a couple of days, so they basically had two days at home (for Christmas). It wasn’t much of a break for them,” Mouat said. “Coaches have been getting ready for both Ambrose and Lakeland. We have to make sure we have our ducks in a row to know what we’re up against.”
The Skylights will take on Ambrose University on Thursday afternoon as well as Lakeland College on Saturday. Mouat broke down the opponents his team will face in the coming days.
“They both play really fast. It’s a different shot clock, so they’re going to be moving up and down and we’re going to have to focus on defensive transition and as always getting first-time rebounds down the floor, but we just know they are a different animal for sure,” Mouat said. “Ambrose hasn’t won as many games, but they still pose some challenges.”
“(As for) Lakeland, especially when you look at their schedule, they beat the University of Regina, which is an equivalent of (an NCAA Division I) team in the Canadian ranks,” Mouat continued. “They’re very good and have a lot of nice pieces, (a) great point guard with good size, (and) they’ve just got some kids that can play, so we’re going to have to do some things very well.”
The Skylights take on the Lions of Ambrose on Thursday at 2pm, followed by the Rustlers of Lakeland at 4pm. Catch the contests on the radio, tuning in to KPQX-92.5FM with Noah Friedman giving you the play-by-play.
